Nature Walk Meditation

This meditation is for the development of intuition.

Take a walk outside, briskly or slowly, whatever helps you to clear your mind. If walking is not possible then use whatever means you have to access the outside world. A natural setting is ideal but a residential neighborhood or even a city is fine, so long as you are out in the elements. Pay attention to what you feel inside your body—bring your awareness to your hands, your arms, and your feet. Listen to the wind upon your ears, and feel the movement of your hair.

Turn your attention outward. Look at the plants, the stones, the buildings, the wildlife, the sky. Observe your environment with open curiosity and without judgment or categorization. Keep your thoughts focused on the present moment.

Pay attention to things that grab your attention. If a feeling of curiosity arises, allow this to guide you. Let yourself be drawn to a place where you feel inclined to rest for a moment. Perhaps it’s a tree or a special rock, or a viewpoint. It could be a path or a road. Maybe it’s a bench that you feel the desire to sit on. Listen to these impulses and, to the extent possible, follow them. Take your time to explore what has drawn your attention, if it is not intruding on anyone or anything. Be present, still, and practice the art of listening deeply to all of the elements alive within and around you.

Absorb the experience until you feel complete, and either continue your journey or make your way home. Take some time to journal about the experience or write a poem based on things that you saw and felt. If certain trees, objects, animals, or natural elements felt significant, think about what associations these bring up for you. Your own personal associations and feelings are the most relevant, but if you need some help you can research these symbols. Allow the words that you write to tap into a deeper symbolic meaning. Alternatively, you can draw or paint a picture; if you’re in the midst of a creative project, see if there is a way to integrate some aspect of your nature meditation into it.
